An Almost Journal Spread

Journal1 by Roberta Warshaw
Journal1, a photo by Roberta Warshaw on Flickr.
A few weeks ago I began an online class with Joanna Coles on transforming an old date book into a journal. I didn't have an old date book so I cheated and bought a new one. We began by gluing some of the pages together and then taping them and painting over the tape.

That was as far as I got until yesterday when I stumbled upon a Jane De Fazio tutorial. I could really see myself trying this one and so I did and here it is. You can find the tutorial here.

I still don't have words for it. That may come later. If not, so be it. It will have no words and be a sketch book of sorts. But I have a feeling I could actually write something in this.

What a lovely leaf spread, Roberta! I like your technique and links. I struggle with the whole concept of an art journal. Even though I’ve read a lot of books about them, even though I’ve seen a lot of artists’ works, I can’t seem to keep an art journal myself. Somehow in my mind art is art and words are words. Although I do like adding my photos and bits of collage to writing journals, they feel primarily like a diary rather than an art journal. Special-themed art journals sometimes work, if I can keep interested. Best of luck with your new engagement calendar art journal (what a great way to recycle) and your online class (it looks very interesting)!

Beautiful pages Roberta! I also really love seeing your ghost prints on top of each other and your beautiful wood block print. All so inspiring! You recently asked me if I was going to be selling a piece I created recently. I am so hoping to reopen my Etsy shop - not sure what pieces I will put in there yet, and which items I am going to use for Christmas gifts ... I am so hoping to fill the shop up soon though!

that is so lovely, and so very YOU. the mark of experience and artistic vision and talent is being able to watch someone's tutorial and make it your own. It's something I still struggle with.
