Week 2 of Extreme Composition

This weeks lesson in Jane Davies class "Extreme Composition" is all about shapes. Squares, circles, triangles etc. This was a really great exercise for me since I have so much trouble with abstraction. Somehow everything ends up looking like a flower or a landscape. Not this time! This exercise really pushed me to work abstractly. Here are some exercises I did from the first part of the lesson. Remember these are not finished pieces, they are exercises and techniques. I used my gelli plate to create them since I am so comfortable with that tool and it really took the masked shapes and helped me edge them toward abstraction.

You're really making me want to take that class. I can see your renewed inspiration for sure.

These are great . . . love them. I hope Jane repeats this workshop although I think I'll start with her composition one in October.

Love these! The simplicity of working in black and white coupled with the geometric shapes are just wonderful! If this is extreme, well, keep pushing the boundaries.

I ;like the colors in these. The feeling I get from them is deeply mysterious, even though I can see all the parts - I'm not sure how else to say that.

These may be abstract, but they are anything but unrecognizable, especially the top two. Very evocative, and emotional. Thank you for sharing. I struggle with abstract, in that I always think the subject must not be recognizable. Your work shows that that simply isn't true.

These are all gorgeous. I found your blog via the Gelli Pinterest page. I bought Jane Davies' DVD a few months ago but for some reason I didn't know she taught online classes. I might have to sign up for the one in March. Thanks for the inspiration!
