This is a new painting I did using some of the new creative processes I am learning in my class with Nancy Hillis. It is a great class even though I am not able to work every day with all that is going on right now.
One of the biggest things I have learned is to activate the paper right away. Gets the juices flowing and does away with the fear of the blank paper. Even if it all gets covered up by paint in the end, there is a history to the paper that is still there and even pokes through in places.
I find my love of earth tones taking over a bit. Color seems too overwhelming right now with all the other things we are learning. Color will be back. I am quite sure of that. In more ways than one.

|"Unraveled" -acrylic on paper|
This has been a hard week. My dad ended up in the ER due to a compression fracture in his spine. He is now in a rehab and we are not quite sure when he will be going back home.
I haven't been able to really delve into the class I am taking with Nancy Hillis what with everything that is going on but I did create this painting. I am calling it "Unraveled". Since that is how I am feeling lately. Unraveled.
Not sure where it is all going. Needless to say, I am not too happy right now and I miss the desert.

The first module in Nancy Hillis's class titled "The Artist's Journey" was all about mark making. It was a great exercise for me Very freeing. The idea is to make marks without thinking too much about them. Just to sort of go where they take you.
After I did them I decided to cut them up and make some studies with them. I think that some of them resemble totems. They are small, only 6" x 9" but I may like to try them at a larger size.
I really like the way the rust color turned out. It is a mixture of Quinacridone red, Hansa Yellow and Ultramarine blue.
I will try and post each week as the course progresses.

I am working on getting a bit more abstract in my work. No easy feat for someone who always has to put something "real" in a painting before it seems finished.
I remember years ago when I began doing landscapes, everyone wanted to know when I would paint florals again! So here is to "pictures of nothing"!

On Monday I am taking an online workshop with Nancy Hillis. It will be good for me to do this since I have only just begun getting back into acrylics. I missed painting so much that it was only a matter of time for me to try and get back to it in spite of not having a studio any longer. I am working in the bedroom so I can't work too large but whatever. At least I am working.....
I already got paint on the curtains. Sigh.
I will try and post some photos of my class projects as well.
